WEIGHTY MATTER

The effort to keep our bodies in as good a condition as possible is something we all face at some time. Some matters are treatable, but my hair has gone and baldness is the outcome. I also want to lose weight as my hip is aching and I know diet and exercise are the best ways for me to achieve this, not some drug. Those who can afford the ‘weight loss’ medicines, rather than those that need them, are using them for weight management. The problem is that people can’t seem to stop when they get to a desired weight as it will most likely come back, so they must continue using the medicine. To the non-medical person like me that sounds similar to a drug addict’s plight. Don’t cheat, use medicine as your doctor prescribes. It’s in your own interest.

(But millions are seeing the results from taking the shots and unlikely to give them up)

LOL

Re: “Die laughing” (Letters to the Editor, Aug. 3): Former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson (R-WY) in his eulogy to his friend and former U.S. president George H. Bush recited: ”Humour is the universal solvent against the abrasive elements of life!” The profoundness of his statement, has never let me forget it.

(If we don’t laugh, we will cry)

COMEDY OF OLD

I so enjoyed “Die laughing” (Letters to the Editor, Aug. 3): Where are the comics that gave us ‘side-splitting’ laughs to take our minds off all the problems that seem to surround us. I Love Lucy, Barney Miller, Everybody Loves Raymond, to name a few. Now the only series are detectives, firefighters or doctors. I tape some of the old comedies on particular stations so I can have a belly laugh to forget what is going on in this world right now. I grew up without TV but we had radio and there were comic shows bringing us our escape then.

(Gone are the days of humour which could be edgy made us all laugh. Nowadays you have to be cautious about who will be offended)
