BEARS AT MARINELAND
Re “Marineland ordered to pay $85Gs after bears kept in cramped quarters” (The Canadian Press, Aug. 15): I just wanted to say thank you for your coverage of Marineland’s terrible lack of care for their bears. This sadly comes as no surprise as so many animals at the park have died after years of neglect and poor treatment. I’m at a loss as to why the park is allowed to stay open. Again, having a paper like the Toronto Sun covering this as you have done for Kiska will help to bring attention to the miserable conditions of Marineland and create a demand for them to do better or close.

LOTS OF BATTERIES
Re “Six sustainable ways to save money and the planet” (Homes, Mark Douglas Wessel, Aug. 12): I’m confused with some of the environmental suggestions. If you compost (which we do) and prepare meals from scratch, there is minimal at the curb. Regarding the plastic bags, if you don’t get them from the grocery store, you have to buy them to line your under sink garbage pail (one per week, maybe less). Can’t see the environmental gain there, just loss to the taxpayer. My biggest complaint is calling the lawn mower and trimmer, etc. “electric.” As I read the article, I was picturing an electric cord. We used to use one cord for everything. Now, with a transition to battery, I believe they should be called battery-operated mowers, etc. One cord went on forever. Now, we have a potential landfill full of all of these huge rechargeable batteries and their chargers. Has there been a solution to the demise of the batteries that is ‘zero’ landfill?

(No, there so no solution because governments create policies for the short term and don’t give thought to the long-term impact)
