BOO HOO

The booing of the American national anthem has to stop. We are better than this. The American hockey players are representing their country. A country they love as much as we love Canada. Because we are at odds with the man and his minions who are running America, does not mean that we cannot act civil to the Americans who have done us no harm.

Re “We need a fed election, now” (Editorial, Feb. 16): Who is worse? A premier with double the opposition popularity in polls who wants to call an early election when the time is ripe? Or an unethical prime minister, with record low popularity, clinging to power with support from a minority party leader who needs his seat a few more months to qualify for his pension? A prime minister who eventually steps down only after his caucus members ask him to leave? A prime minister who suspends Parliament at a time of crisis, while his party elects a new leader?

JUNK JUSTICE

Re “Sinner accepts 3-month ban” (Sports, Feb. 16): Let’s say my kid has a big hockey game on Saturday and I catch him with three stolen chocolate bars on Tuesday. After some negotiation, I ground him for three days, starting Wednesday, and let him keep the chocolate. Sound fair? That’s effectively the “punishment” Jannik Sinner negotiated for having a banned steroid in his system and winning three Grand Slam tournaments. He keeps the three trophies and his three-month suspension ends just in time for him to play the next Grand Slam — the French Open. As Billy Joel says, “I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.”
