As a proud retired Toronto Police officer, I was appalled when seeing Toronto Police officers delivering coffee to protesters attempting to block public roads. In my time, Toronto was ruled by left-wing politicians, but the police brass would never have allowed their officers to be waiters for any protesters. If they did, officers would have refused to do it. I guess the left have now got the gutless brass they wanted in charge. The on-scene supervisor who authorized this move should hang their head in shame. But I doubt they will.
(The subsequent statement the police put out, saying this was an attempt at de-escalation, doesn’t pass the smell test, either. This was an embarrassment)

Re “Less talk, more action” (Warren Kinsella, Jan. 5): The mob believes the IDF supermarket symbol represents the Israel Defense Forces. These people are clearly ignorant of history and world affairs. It is a slight nuance for Quebec’s apartheid state to switch intolerance from English speakers to Jews. In Ontario, and under federal authority, we arrest, imprison, fine and usurp legislated freedoms of peaceful trucker protesters (oh yes, I forgot a few horns). Yet police allow ‘advocating genocide,’ ‘publicly inciting hatred likely to lead to a breach of the peace,’ and ‘wilfully promoting hatred,” the three criteria for hate-related offences under Canada’s Criminal Code. In the name of anti-Semitism, they allow arson, property damage and blockades. We saw it in 1938 Germany. Canadian authorities are feckless fools.

Larry Sylvester Acton, Ont.
(Their inaction makes them look like fools. This is the deliberate targeting of one community, our Jewish community — and yet authorities are doing little)
ACTING CAUTIOUSLY
There has been a lot of talk recently in the media about the police not doing enough in the wake of anti-Semitic incidents and pro-Palestinian demonstrations. I agree that they may be tip-toeing a bit and may be trying too hard not to incite these volatile groups, but I can’t blame them. I’ve been around a long time and I know that the first time force is used and people are arrested, the cameras will be rolling, and the media will throw our cops under the bus. It’s so predictable.
M. Benson Brampton
(Simply put, the cops need to do their jobs)
