Re “Time to talk turkey on civil service cuts” (Editorial, July 18): Kudos for pointing out that allowing the federal public service and Crown corporations to make needed major cuts is foolhardy. To improve federal services’ efficiency, there should be no sacred cows! There should be no special treatment of the Liberals’ propaganda machine the CBC and the poorly managed and inefficient Canada Post — both are cash sinkholes! Since the public service ballooned by 40% under the Trudeau government, major reduction — not just Carney tinkering — is required. At the same time, the Carney government must get a handle on its insatiable appetite for contracting out to Liberal-friendly companies. Question is, with Carney planning to run a $92-billion deficit, while adding hundreds of billions to the $1-trillion national debt, can he actually be trusted to make the cuts required to get Canada on sound economic footings?

(For there to be meaningful economic impact on the debt and deficit, spending needs to be cut in addition to reducing the public service. Carney likely does not have the stomach for it)

WATERBOMBERS MADE IN CANADA

Now that Canada has committed to spending more on defence, we can keep some of this money in Canada. As the wildfire threat grows worldwide, our military can purchase a dozen or more made-in- Canada DHC-515 water bombers from DeHavilland Canada.  These are in defence of our country. Canada first — and they can also be available at a cost to our allies as part of NATO or Australia as part of a mutual defence program. We fulfil our military spending, help our friends, and benefit Canada. Win-win.

(It is a worthwhile investment)

OF A CERTAIN AGE

The following is a fleeting thought about aging, which is directed at my fellow seniors. We all leave unique footprints in the sand of time and lasting memories while scurrying along life’s shore. Cautious footsteps now, unlike the ones made in our prime, but we still have an opportunity to make many more.
