SPEED TRAPS

Re “Parkside Dr. speed camera vandalized for fifth time in past 6 months” (Jane Stevenson, May 23): The vandalism indicates that many residents are hostile toward this speed reduction program. But vandalizing the devices doesn’t solve the problem. A solution might be to use cameras exclusively in school zones during school hours only. Most Torontonians would likely accept that. Premier Doug Ford recently stated that speed cameras are being unfairly used as “a revenue tool.” Too often they’re strategically deployed on busy main streets where most people are ticketed for minor speeding violations. So Ford is correct, speed cameras are misused to fill city coffers.

BONHOEFFER’S PHILOSOPHY

Twentieth century German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer propounded that stupid people are more dangerous than evil people. Bonhoeffer felt that stupid people were incapable of critical thinking, that they often put forward ideas based on no facts, were easily led by others and required authoritative figures to follow. To me, this clearly describes the voting masses in Canada. A failed ability to critically think for themselves. A willingness to believe absurd statements and to follow the crowd.

ARMY CADETS

Prime Minister Mark Carney is proposing big, bold ideas for Canada. Our youth are experiencing a lack of summer jobs and full-time employment. Here is a bold idea: Paid army cadets for all males and females after Grade 11 during July and August. Physical fitness, hiking, canoeing, survival skills, and money in the bank. Can’t beat it. And after Grade 12, how about one year of paid basic training. A win-win for Canada and its youth. And a big step in the right direction.

(This is not a bad concept unfortunately there is no one to champion it)
