Re “Trudeau sparked 51st state threat” (Brian Lilley, March 16): It was obvious to anyone following Justin Trudeau’s theatrics around his last days, and his disdain for Donald Trump, that his response to Trump’s tariff threats would not go well. For Trudeau to respond to Trump with the comment that “Canada would dissolve, Canada wouldn’t be able function,” ranks among the biggest faux pas Trudeau has made in his years as prime minister. This response was a poke in the Canadian eye by a PM who was forced out by his own party!
(Trudeau had no clue what to do or say in the face of all of this. Good riddance to him)
CANADA NEEDS BETTER
Re “Trudeau sparked 51st state threat” (Brian Lilley, March 16): Imagine a leader of a sovereign country with no backbone. Well, we had such up until a few days ago. It doesn’t surprise me in the least that he said this. Actually, he continued to make his feelings heard on this subject as recently as last Sunday. During one of his many “farewell” speeches, he reiterated that democracy wasn’t a given and neither was Canada. This fatalist attitude is conduct unbecoming of the leader of this country. PLAYING INTO TRUMP’S HAND
In the beginning I thought, ‘Just ignore Trump, let him beat his chest about taking over Canada and he’ll probably shut up.’ That didn’t happen, Canadian hockey fans started booing the anthem, politicians began airing commercials on how they are going to protect Canada, and American flags are being removed from our venues. This is exactly what Trump wants: Divide and conquer. Let’s not let one man turn our two great countries against each other; otherwise he wins.
