JAYS’ SLUMP
As Steve Simmons said, heads should roll for what the current Blue Jays are producing (May 5). The current owners, Rogers Communications, are not baseball people, their only concern is their bottom line. Spending $400 million on stadium renovations and increasing ticket prices are only ploys to increase revenues. Jays president Mark Shapiro and, in his ninth season as Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins, have done nothing to bolster the club to a championship caliber. Prior to coming to Toronto, their tenure at Cleveland was a bust. Atkins’ latest attempts to add high-profile players to the team are a joke, you need more than AAA no-names. The fans deserve more than just a fancy, dressed-up ball park. It shouldn’t take a GM close to ten years to create a winner, if he has the baseball smarts necessary. Heads should roll.

FANS HAVE ANXIETY TOO
Re “We stink” (Toronto Sun, May 5): The frontpage headline extols the angst felt by the vast majority of Toronto sports fans. Why do our teams, with highly skilled, well-compensated players, continue to underperform? I have been advised by my cardiologist and banker that I can no longer support our established professional teams due to health and wealth concerns. We have the highest average ticket prices in all of the leagues and teams that constantly fall short of expectations and tear the hearts out of us. As a result, I am shifting my allegiance totally to Toronto’s PWHL team. If they let me down, I will have no choice but to devote my energy to becoming a better chess player.

(That’s a laudable goal. But yes, why can’t there be a winning team here?)
