PROMISES MADE
When is Doug Ford going to keep his election promise and make the provincial part of Hwy. 407 free? He wants to ease congestion by building a tunnel but he could help right now by keeping his word.

MONEY IN YOUR POCKET
Re “Carney, like Trudeau, thinks big deficits are the answer to tough times” (Lorrie Goldstein, May 10): Many pundits presume that taxpayers “finance” the federal government. However, in order for Canadians to pay tax, the federal government must first put dollars into their hands through its own disbursements. Examine the banknotes in our wallets — if they did not come initially from the government-owned Bank of Canada, then they are counterfeit. Taxation has many purposes — reducing inequality, matching costs to users, and dampening overall aggregate demand to prevent inflation — but the federal government always gets its funding directly or indirectly from its central bank. That explains why the national government has never run out of money during war, financial crisis or pandemic slowdown. Consequently, government expenditures should be evaluated not by deficit numbers but by the effect on the real economy. Since there are currently more than 1.5 million unemployed Canadians actively seeking work, ample room exists for targeted spending to make sure enough job opportunities exist. Full employment not only puts money into the pockets of those who need it most and reduces social service costs, but the increased production of goods and services also relieves inflationary pressures.

BARBIE NIGHT
Let’s lighten up the rhetoric and concentrate on what’s important. The Blue Jays are having a Barbie day on May 17, two years after our then fearless leader got his Barbie on in a selfie. The Jays, like the Liberals, promise indoor plumbing but we always end up using the outhouse.
