ECONOMIC UNION

With all of this nonsense of Canada becoming the 51 state, there are at least two big issues to consider. If Canada were to politically merge with the U.S., the most likely scenario would be that each province would become a state. But, wait! What is that large grey animal in the room? Sacre bleu! It is Quebec. They are not very happy being part of Canada, does anyone really think they would join the U.S? If Canada were to clean up its own internal trade problems and dispose of the milk issue, perhaps a more solid economic union could be established.

(Based on Mark Carney’s cabinet appointments to deal with these very issues, it is highly unlikely.)

LEADER REVIEW

I am disappointed by the Pierre Poilievre decision to allow a party member to give up a seat for him. Poilievre lost his riding. The Conservatives finished second in the election with a leader who made many people uncomfortable. Has Poilievre not learned a lesson from the way Justin Trudeau hung on? There should be a leadership review before any byelection is held. If the party supports Poilievre, great. If not, find someone who relates better to those of us who want change for the better.

(So far, they are sticking with Poilievre who should be back in the House within a matter of months.)

MAKING A TRADE

So I guess it’s clear now that Prime Minister Mark Carney was not the one we wanted to deal with Donald Trump. A sweet deal was already having the ink dry taking tariffs off U.K. aluminum while he intelligently sat on his hands. Thanks, U.K., for the warning. Who are our friends while Trump licks his waring chops?

(Canada is behind — again securing trade deals with other countries.)

CBC REFERENDUM

Now that the Conservatives have been defeated, how about a referendum regarding defunding the CBC. They are being given my money. They are being given a lot of people’s money. Let the people decide and not the government.

Phil Anhalt

Paris, Ont.

(A referendum will never happen with the Liberals in power — in fact Carney committed to giving the CBC more money.)
