My nana was Stella Mazzacato, an avid reader and regular opinionated voice in your Letters to the Editor section. It is with a very heavy heart that I write to inform you of her passing on May 24. One of her biggest joys later in her life was writing in and offering up her editorial on pieces she read about within your paper. As she was not that great with technology, she always had me, her grandson, type them out as she dictated them to me. I lost count of how many emails I must have sent you, as well as the number of submissions she had published. It brought her so much joy to call me up and tell me that we had a letter published, as if I had as much to do with it as she did. I still remember her calling me up regularly and saying, “Jay-gee, I have a few letters for you to write.”

(Since 2008, Stella had 162 letters published. Her opinion mattered, and she was never shy about them. May she rest in peace)

LESS THAN ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT FORD

Jay Goldberg’s column on “Doug Ford’s fiscal flop” (May 27) was music to the ears of Tory voters, who are outright disenchanted with Ford’s stewardship. Betrayed would be putting it mildly for how I feel after voting for Doug Ford twice, and I’m going to have very little enthusiasm to revisit my loyalty in the next election with a balanced budget out-of-sight, and after yet another splurge of at least $250 million of borrowed money to put liquor in corner stores. Oh, and my surgery wait time of two years.

(There were high expectations Ford was going to put Ontario’s fiscal house in order … we are still waiting)

FOWL GOVERNANCE

I am very concerned about the state of Canada’s economy, but have an explanation for its sorry condition. It is hard to soar with eagles when you are governed by turkeys.

(Our turkey has overstayed his welcome)
