On Sunday, not long after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and eight days after the assassination attempt on the former president Trump, Alec Burleson, of the St. Louis Cardinals, hit a home run off the Atlanta Braves. As Burleson rounded third base, he and some teammates in the dugout put their right hands on their right ears and held up their left fists.
The Cardinals denied it afterward, but it appeared to be an homage to Trump.
“Definitely not a political statement,” Matt Carpenter told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “That’s off base.”
Carpenter said it was meant to mimic a DJ listening to his headphones — apparently, Burleson was a rapper named “Biscuit” in college.
But what about what happened in New York City during a game between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays?
In that one, Tampa Bay shortstop Taylor Walls pumped his right fist twice and yelled “fight, fight,” after hitting a double.
