Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Winckowski might have been better in jury duty than he was on the mound on Thursday.
Winckowski was only on the hill because he got out of serving jury duty on Tuesday when he was asked if there was any reason he couldn’t participate, NESN’s Tom Caron reported. Winckowski had replied: “I have to pitch in Clearwater (Fla.,) Thursday,” according to Caron. He was let out to return to his day job.
Red Sox pitcher Josh Winckowski had jury duty Tuesday. As candidates were whittled down he remained, and it looked like he would be selected. Asked if there was any reason he couldn’t serve, he said “I have to pitch in Clearwater Thursday.” He was sent home. #RedSoxpic.twitter.com/vMWwbsUj5k

Winckowski, a former Blue Jays draft pick, gave up six runs (five earned) in 3 2/3 innings of action in a 6-1 loss on Thursday against Philadelphia.
Picked by the Jays late in the 15th round in 2016, Winckowski was part of the deal that got the Jays starter Steven Matz from the New York Mets before he was later dealt to the Red Sox. Winckowski has emerged as a good piece in the Sox’s bullpen.
He went 4-4 with a 2.88 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 82 strikeouts in 84 1/3 innings across 60 games last season after making his major-league debut a year earlier.
