Multiple reports on Wednesday confrim the team has reached an agreement on a two-year, $15-million US contract with the versatile 28-year-old, who most recently played with the New York Yankees.
Kiner-Falefa could be an answer at third and second base for the Jays but more likely offers some infield depth. He certainly isn’t a move-the-needle type of acquisition for a team that needs to improve offensively.
The agreement – which is pending the results of a physical – comes a day after the team signed centre fielder Kevin Kiermaier to a one-year deal to return to the team.
It remains to be seen where Kiner-Falefa fits in the Toronto infield or if it sets the stage for a potential trade as the team is finally making some traction this off-season. He certainly fits the profile of players favoured by Jays general manager Ross Atkins, in that his versatility would allow for him to play at multiple positions.
