It was a good news, bad news day for fans of the Toronto Blue Jays. The bad news was all-star shortstop Bo Bichette was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, retroactive to Saturday. The good was heralded prospect Orelvis Martinez was called up. Martinez is the franchise’s top hitting prospect. He has shown a lot of power in the minor leagues, including 16 home runs and 28 RBI in 63 games with Triple-A Buffalo. Martinez is batting .260, up from the .226 he hit at Double-A New Hampshire last season (he hit .263 with 11 home runs in 55 games in his first taste of Triple-A last season). He has particularly hit left-handed pitchers well.

The Jays also announced that left-handed pitcher Brandon Eisert has been optioned to Buffalo.
Right-hander Ryan Burr was also called up from Buffalo and activated before Tuesday’s game against Boston.
Martinez is only 22 years old. Toronto also recently called up prospect Addison Barger, 24 and has three regulars who are 25 (Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Davis Schneider and Alejandro Kirk).
