Off to a great start to his first season with the Blue Jays, Kevin Kiermaier had been able to elude the health woes that had plagued him in recent seasons.

Until Thursday night, that is.

The acrobatic Jays outfielder was forced to leave the game after taking a pitch off his left wrist in the second inning of the game against the Houston Astros.

And it wasn’t just any pitch, either — a 96-mile-per-hour fastball from flame-throwing Astros starter Framber Valdez. After getting a visit from Jays trainer Jose Minstral and manager John Schneider, Kiermaier remained in the game as a base runner.

But after a consultation with coaches and trainers between innings, Kiermaier exited the game and was replaced in centre field by Daulton Varsho.

A preliminary X-ray by the team showed no fracture of Kiermaier’s wrist and the Jays announced the injury as a left wrist contusion.
