Blue Jays acquire Seranthony Dominguez from Orioles to bolster a beleaguered bullpen

Some much-needed relief to a beleaguered Blue Jays bullpen arrived on Tuesday.

In the case of Seranthony Dominguez, he didn’t have to go that far after the Blue Jays and Orioles completed a deal in between games of Tuesday’s split doubleheader.

Toronto’s bullpen has been under considerable stress of late, boiling over in the past three games, all losses, heading into Tuesday’s nightcap.

The MLB trade deadline is Thursday, an off-day for the Blue Jays as they get ready to play host to the Kansas City Royals.

Relief pitching was high on Toronto’s trade to-do list, an area that has gradually succumbed to attrition and poor performance.

Dominguez, 30, is in the final year of his deal, which doesn’t fit the Jays’ profile under GM Ross Atkins.

A hard-thrower who is also known to issue plenty of walks, he joined the Orioles at last year’s trade deadline from Philadelphia. Though he had closing experience with the Phillies, he’ll likely serve in the setup role to Jeff Hoffman made available when Yimi Garcia went on the injured list (elbow) with no assurance he’ll be back this season.

In return for Dominguez and cash, the Jays dealt pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown, a right-hander ranked 10th among Toronto’s prospects, to the Orioles.

While any arm must be viewed as a welcome sight, Dominguez isn’t expected to be the one and only reliever the Jays are expected to add prior to the Thursday 6 p.m. deadline.
