That’s when New York starter Domingo German was tossed as he came out to pitch in the fourth innings after umpires checked his hands for a sticky substance.

And boy did they find some goo.
“It was extremely sticky, is how home plate umpire James Hoye described it to a pool reporter following the game. “My fingers had a hard time coming off of his palm. Cleary shiny on the palm and the fingertips and it was extremely sticky.
“The instant I looked at his hand, it was extremely shiny and extremely sticky.”
The routine check was made by all four members of the umpiring crew who stopped German on his way to the mound to pitch the fourth inning.
Previously, the Yankees right hander had retired all nine Blue Jays batters he had faced, which didn’t necessarily raise suspicions though perhaps it should have.

It wasn’t the first sticky situation for German this season. In April, he was in the middle of a controversy in New York when umpires checked the pitcher’s hands but allowed him to remain in the game.
No such luck this time.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider, who had insinuated that Yankees slugger Aaron Judge had done something untoward the previous night before he hit a mammoth home run, had no sympathy for the Yankees right hander, who faces a 10-game suspension for the violation.
It’s unfortunate that it happens for the sport, for the game,” Schneider said. “He had good stuff. Good curve ball. Not the first time it’s happened, but to each their own.”

And then the zinger: “I’ll let Domingo worry about that for the next 10 days.”
Perhaps for comedic effect, German suggested afterwards that “it was definitely just the rosin bag. Sweat and the rosin bag. I don’t need any extra help to grab the baseball.”
