Health setback extends Martinez’s absence from Sportsnet’s Blue Jays broadcasts
Buck Martinez’s lengthy absence from Sportsnet’s play-by-play broadcast booth was extended on Monday night for what he’s describing as a “little health setback.”
That said, the beloved broadcaster insisted he was “feeling pretty good” but was taking the extra time off “out of an abundance of caution,” Rob Longley reported.
Martinez is tough as nails, so he’ll likely be back at the ballpark sooner than later. We can’t wait, and he probably can’t either, given we are currently in one of the most successful and energetic stretches of Blue Jays baseball in the past nine seasons.

SIMMONS: No reason to believe Maple Leafs could ever win in the playoffs with Mitch Marner
The Maple Leafs world may be a Mitch Marner-less one but as far as Steve Simmons is concerned, Toronto hasn’t lost anything, at least when it comes to playoff time.
Sure, sure, Marner has been great in the regular season, and a top-five right winger in the league, but while he has helped get the Leafs to the playoffs, he has struggled to get the team to advance in the post-season.
In nine years, he’s been good enough to get the team there, but terrible once there. Is there any reason to believe the Leafs could ever have won a Stanley Cup with Marner?

Blue Jays manager John Schneider laughs off claim by renowned Yankees broadcaster
Blue Jays manager John Schneider and his team certainly had the last laugh after renowned Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay said Toronto — who were on top of the AL East after an exhilarating four-game sweep of New York — “aren’t a first-place team.”
Snort.
Kay’s dismissive remarks came after a lengthy rant on the Yankee’s struggles of late, Longley noted, but he was probably eating his words following the sweep.
“Is Michael Kay here?” Schneider asked in a deadpan tone, prior to the fourth and final win in the series.

Marner reveals factors for leaving Maple Leafs, signing with Vegas
Mitch Marner shed some light on his desire to play for the Vegas Golden Knights during his first news conference as a member of the Western Conference club, making it clear the Nevada team was his first choice — for him and his family.
“We thought about going to free agency, but this is the place we want to be,” Marner said, referring to himself and his wife, Stephanie, according to Terry Koshan.
“We don’t want to lose that opportunity, and we wanted to join this hockey team.”
That said, he admitted that it was “really tough to leave Toronto” and “didn’t ever think” the day would come.
“I was so grateful to play there for nine years.”

Stretch of Hwy. 11 reopens after home invasion sparks shelter in place
The OPP lifted a shelter-in-place order for a stretch of Hwy. 11 after the road was closed to traffic following a Canada Day home invasion near Huntsville.
The highway reopened to traffic after six people were arrested, Spiro Papuckoski reported.
The investigation is ongoing.
