The armed robbers allegedly followed the pair roughly 50 kms from Manhattan to a home in the Windmill Pond community of Morristown, N.J., where the holdup took place on Saturday morning, Morristown Department of Public Safety posted on Facebook.

Police responded around 8 a.m. after receiving several reports from neighbours of an alleged armed robbery.

“Morristown Bureau of Police responded to several 911 calls reporting an alleged armed robbery in the Windmill Pond section of town,” the Facebook post read. “A witness reported seeing a group of unidentified males exit a dark-coloured SUV and rob two individuals in a second vehicle at gunpoint. The suspects allegedly took money and personal items before fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported.

“The Bureau’s Investigative Unit immediately responded and began taking steps to advance the investigation, including conducting victim and witness interviews and canvassing the area for available surveillance footage.

“At this time, it is believed this was an isolated incident, as it appears the victims were targeted and followed from Manhattan.”

Among the items reportedly taken were jewelry and a watch.

A neighbour told an NBC affiliate that one of the victims played for the Jets, which ESPN later confirmed.

“To be honest, I cannot make sense of what happened,” a witness, who chose to remain anonymous, told NBC.

“I saw them take something from the garage. I was thinking ‘Oh my God, this is a robbery.’”

It remains unclear which Jets player was allegedly robbed.

“You have high-profile people that get targeted as they go out into the city and otherwise,” a neighbour told the outlet.

“It’s disconcerting but there’s really nothing we can do about it. You just have to hope it doesn’t happen again.”
