Kelowna native Josh Gorges, who played eight seasons with the Montreal Canadiens as a defenceman, has been hired as an assistant coach by the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets.
Under recently promoted head coach Derrick Martin, Gorges will bring “extensive professional playing experience, strong leadership qualities, and a deep connection to the Rockets organization,” the team said in its announcement Wednesday.
Gorges played four seasons and 306 games for the Rockets from 2000 to 2004 before signing as an undrafted free agent with the San Jose Sharks and being traded to Montreal for Craig Rivet in 2007. He played a total of 783 NHL games and 68 NHL playoff games, with 17 regular-season goals and 107 points, plus nine playoff assists. He retired in 2018 after four seasons with the Buffalo Sabres and has spent the past five years with the West Kelowna Warriors of the BCHL, including the last four as an assistant coach.
“Josh brings a championship pedigree, NHL experience, and deep ties to this city and our organization,” Rockets president and general manager Bruce Hamilton said in the team statement. “He’s lived the Kelowna Rockets standard and understands what it takes to win here. We’re thrilled to bring him back in this new role.”
