Brooks Koepka: I'd share my major secrets, but nobody has asked!

AUGUSTA, GA. — Brooks Koepka has won five major championship in the past six years, but none of his peers have ever asked him how he has managed to do it.

“No. Nobody ever really talks to me about it. Maybe they do and I’m just not paying attention because I’m out here doing, kind of in my own world when I’m out here playing,” Koepka said. “I don’t really think anybody’s asked.”

The reigning PGA Champion says, depending who you are, all a player would have to do is ask.

“I think, yeah, to certain people I would,” he said of sharing some secrets.

Tiger Woods speaks reverentially of the passing down of golf knowledge from one generation to the next and Koepka confided on Tuesday that, as a young player, he borrowed from the mindsets of Dustin Johnson and Graeme McDowell.

“Dustin’s nonchalant attitude, being able to laugh,” Koepka said. “I remember, he might not even remember this, I was watching Doral, might have been 2014 or 2015, he hit it right on like 14, tried to punch it out. It hit the corner of the cart path and basically bounced back where it was, and he just laughed at it. And I would have exploded at that at the time. But the fact he was able to find that kind of funny kind of changed the way I thought.

“Then G-Mac, just his grittiness and the way he goes about his process, he just gets the best out of himself every day. I thought that was super admirable.”

Why is it then, that no player looking to crack the major championship code has asked for help from one of the most prolific major champs of his generation? Perhaps they are afraid of what they might hear.

“If you can’t get up for the biggest events, I don’t know, I think there’s something wrong with you,” Koepka said. 

One thing is certain, Koepka’s belief that history will judge players on their major accomplishments isn’t going to change any time soon.

“That’s what I think you’re judged by, your legacy, what you’re defined by,” he said.
