Corey Conners leaves Masters with top-10 finish and 'sour taste in my mouth'

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Many Canadian golf fans were simply proud to have a Canadian among the final groups on Sunday at the Masters. Corey Conners wasn’t among them.

“It’s a sour taste in my mouth right now,” Conners said after picking up the fourth top-10 finish of his career at Augusta National. “Not the Sunday I certainly was hoping for. I just didn’t get the ball in the hole, didn’t score it like I wanted to.”

Playing in the second-to-last group with Patrick Reed, Conners’s day began with a bewildering missed tap-in par putt on the first hole.

The 33-year-old’s Achilles heel has long been his putting, but since switching to a new putter last month his work on the greens has been impressive. But after making just a single three-putt through three rounds this week, Conners made three more on Sunday en route to a 3-over 75 to finish tied for eighth at 5 under.

“Today stings,” he said. “It’s hard to take many positives coming off the course shooting 3 over. But a solid week overall and I definitely did a lot of things this week that I was happy about and can build off going into the summer.

“Yeah, tough way to end the event, putting myself in a good spot. But still lots of positives I can take away from the week once I’m able to reflect.”

Nick Taylor was the only other Canadian to make the cut. After missing nine consecutive major championship cuts, the five-time PGA Tour winner finally broke the curse, but finished in a tie for 40th at 3 over.

Taylor Pendrith and Mike Weir missed the cut.
