AUGUSTA, Ga. — There are all sorts of ways golfers express their frustrations after a really bad round, but most really bad rounds aren’t played in the Masters and shown around the world.

Rising American star Nick Dunlap shot an 18-over par 90 on Thursday at Augusta National, and there was a legitimate question as to whether the 21-year-old would show up on Friday to continue play.

Not only did he show up, Dunlap bettered his score by 19 strokes, shooting a one-under 71.

But before the young golfer returned to the most famous golf course in the world, he let some steam off and worked on his game away from, well, everyone and everything.

“I hit a couple buckets of balls at my Airbnb into the woods,” Dunlap said after his round. “I don’t know if there was any houses or anything back there. But you just hit a bunch of golf balls.”

Dunlap went into some detail on the purpose of the trip to the woods.

“I wouldn’t really say anger. It’s more disappointment than anger, to be honest. I was kind of past the anger point very, very early into that round,” he said.

“You put everything you’ve got into something, and to fail or not do what you want to do, however you want to put it, it’s very, very frustrating.”

Where does one get buckets of balls to fire into the woods on a Thursday night?

“My trainer actually went to Target and got a bunch,” he said. “I probably hit 12 different kinds of golf balls from colours to brands to you name it.”

As for returning to Augusta National on Friday to try again.

“I had more of a knot in my stomach today than I’ve ever had starting a round of golf,” he said.

Kudos to Dunlap for sticking it out.

“Never going to quit. I’ve never withdrawn from anything,” he said. “I’ve never teed it up and not finished. I take pride in that, and that’s always how I’m going to be.”
