DRAFT-DAY TRADES: Red Wings acquire goalie John Gibson from Ducks

John Gibson is going to get a fresh start with the Detroit Red Wings.
The veteran goalie was the centrepiece in a trade between the Wings and Anaheim Ducks as the second day of the National Hockey League draft got underway on Saturday.
A second-round pick by the Ducks in 2011 who went on to play a team-record 506 games (for goaltenders) with the Western Conference club, the 31-year-old Gibson has been the subject of trade rumours for several years. He has two seasons remaining on his contract with an average annual value of $6.4 million US. Goalie Petr Mrazek and a couple of draft picks — a 2026 fourth-rounder and a 2027 second-rounder heading to Anaheim in the trade.
In 29 games in 2024-25, Gibson went 11-11-2 with a .912 save percentage, his highest mark since 2018-19.
“We want to thank John for his time with our organization and being an integral part of the Ducks for more than a decade,” Ducks GM Pat Verbeek said. “It became clear John wanted a new opportunity, and after many discussions with him, we felt now was the right time to make this move. We wish John and his family all the best in their next chapter.”
SPENCE TO SENATORS
As the second day of the National Hockey League draft was getting underway, the Ottawa Senators made a boost to their blue line, acquiring defenceman Jordan Spence from the Los Angeles Kings for a third-round pick in 2025 and a sixth-round pick in 2026.
The 24-year-old Spence had four goals and 24 assists in 79 games for the Kings last season, his second full year in the NHL. He has one year remaining with an AAV of $1.5 million before he becomes a restricted free agent.
PENGUINS, SABRES SWAP
Former Leafs defenceman Conor Timmins is on the move again.
The 26-year-old was sent to the Buffalo Sabres, along with minor-league defenceman Isaac Belliveau, by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
To Pittsburgh went defenceman Connor Clifton and a second-round pick in the 2025 draft. The Penguins used the pick, 39th overall, to take Swift Current defenceman Peyton Kettles.
Timmins had seven points in 17 games with the Penguins last season after he was acquired from Toronto, along with forward Connor Dewar, for a 2025 fifth-round pick.
Clifton had 16 points in 73 games for the Sabres.
CHISHOLM TO CAPITALS
The Washington Capitals acquired defenceman Declan Chisholm, a veteran of 99 NHL games, and a sixth-round pick in 2025, from the Minnesota Wild.
Going to Minnesota are minor-league defenceman Chase Priskie and a fourth-round pick in 2025.
Chisholm had two goals and 10 assists in 66 games with the Wild last season.
RFAS SIGNED
A number of players who were restricted free agents signed new contracts on Saturday with their respective clubs.
Defenceman Kevin Bahl re-signed with the Calgary Flames for six years and an AAV of $5.35 million; goalie Joel Hofer re-signed with the St. Louis Blues for two years and an AAV of $3.4 million; defenceman Haydn Fleury re-signed with the Winnipeg Jets for two years and an AAV of $950,000; right-winger Justin Sourdif, acquired by the Capitals on Friday from the Florida Panthers, signed for two years and AAV of $825,000 with Washington.
