Maple Leafs' Jake McCabe placed on IR, Max Domi fined elbowing Flyers' Garnet Hathaway

The Maple Leafs are going to have do without Jake McCabe for a while.
The Leafs on Monday announced that they have placed the defenceman on injured reserve, retroactive to Sunday, Jan. 5.
McCabe suffered an upper-body injury during a fight with forward Garnet Hathaway of the Philadelphia Flyers in the first period on Sunday, hitting his head off the ice as the two fell. McCabe’s helmet remained on, but he was woozy before heading off the ice under his own power.
In a corresponding move, the Leafs recalled defenceman Marshall Rifai from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.
Leafs coach Craig Berube also has the option of using Conor Timmins, who has been a healthy scratch for the past three games, when Toronto visits Philadelphia for a rematch on Tuesday.
McCabe missed five games in December after he took a shot off his head in a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. With Chris Tanev, McCabe has formed a fine shutdown defence pair for the Leafs.
Against the Flyers, McCabe came to the support of goalie Dennis Hildeby, who was run over by Hathaway.
After McCabe departed the game and did not return, Leafs forward Max Domi wasn’t impressed with Hathaway, seemingly bothered by the goalie interference and the scrap that followed.
In the third period, Domi was assessed a minor penalty for elbowing Hathaway.
On Monday, the NHL went a step further, fining Domi $5,000 US for the elbow on Hathaway.
The penalty on Domi’s part wasn’t a smart one, as it came deep in the offensive zone and with the game tied 2-2 at 5:13 of the third.
Domi, who did not speak to media after the game, was fortunate that the Leafs killed the penalty and went on to win when Morgan Rielly scored in overtime.
The fine issued to Domi is the maximum allowable under the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement. The money will go to players’ emergency assistance fund.
Through 41 games, Domi and McCabe lead the Leafs in penalty minutes with 32 each.
