The Leafs last week qualified Samsonov at $1.8 million US, his salary on a one-year pact that he signed with Toronto last July after the Washington Capitals did not qualify him.
Salary arbitration hearings will be held from July 20 to Aug. 4 with the actual dates for each player to be determined. In any case, there remains plenty of time for Leafs general manager Brad Treliving and Samsonov’s agent Don Meehan to come to an agreement before the sides have to present their cases to an arbitrator.

It’s believed the 26-year-old Samsonov, in talks with the Leafs, will be seeking a new deal in the range of $4 million to $5 million, perhaps with a term of four years. An arbitration award can only be for one or two years.
Samsonov is in line for a nice raise after putting together a sparkling 2022-23 regular season. He was seventh in save percentage in the NHL with a .919 mark, was fifth with a 2.33 goals-against average and was tied for third with four shutouts.
In 42 games, Samsonov compiled a record of 27-10-5 as he solidified himself in the Leafs’ No. 1 role.
In the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, Samsonov was 4-4 in nine games before he was injured and replaced by Joseph Woll in the second round against the Florida Panthers.
