An hour before puck drop — after word leaked out of Morgan Rielly’s five-game suspension — came news that captain John Tavares and Mitch Marner, half of the Core Four forwards, were scratched because of an undisclosed illness.
Earlier in the day, it was announced defenceman Conor Timmins had come down with mononucleosis, but it was not clear if that was linked to whatever kept Tavares and Marner out. A flu bug ravaged the dressing room a few weeks ago.
With those notable absentees, forward Alex Steeves was called up from the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies for his first game this season to play right wing on the fourth line. The projected lineup moved William Nylander up from Tavares’s line to play with Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies. David Kampf, back from his own injury absence last week, was between Bobby McMann and Noah Gregor.
Timothy Liljegren replaced Rielly as TJ Brodie’s partner, while Mark Giordano came back into the lineup after a Saturday night ailment in Ottawa.
