Game 6 of the Bruins series will be played on the 57th anniversary of Toronto clinching its last championship. The victory over Montreal at the Gardens was a precursor to the longest title drought in National Hockey League history, a record that’s an open wound to generations of Leafs fans, which current players are forced to endure despite some being born in a different century.
As ‘67 was the Leafs’ fourth trophy in six years, some fans didn’t even hang around for the Cup presentation that night, while defenceman Bob Baun skipped appearing in the Cup parade, figuring another chance would come along soon.
But it would be more painful if Boston were to eliminate the Leafs at home on the same date and extend the slump to a 58th season.
At least the pressure is on the Bruins this night. Toronto planted a seed of doubt in the Bruins’ 3-1 series lead with a gutsy 2-1 overtime win Tuesday. That played into fears Boston will fritter away its big margin as it did last year versus Florida.
“I’m still pissed off, to be honest,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery told reporters in Boston on Wednesday. “I don’t understand and I don’t accept our play. So, I’m going to be pissed off until the puck drops tomorrow night.”
Monty might want to know the Leafs are 1-4 in games played on May 2 since ‘67, but what better timing for Toronto to push the series to seven?
