Toronto Maple Leafs sign NCAA defenceman John Prokop

The Maple Leafs have dipped into the NCAA ranks for some potential depth on the blue line.

The Leafs announced on Thursday that they’ve signed free-agent defenceman John Prokop to a one-year contract beginning next season. The 23-year-old Prokop will join the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on an amateur tryout for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

A native of Wausau, Wisc., Prokop played at Union College for the past three seasons. In 36 games this season, Prokop had eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points. In 107 career games at Union, Prokop recorded 85 points (20 goals and 65 assists).

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Prokop, who shoots left, was named to the ECAC Hockey First Team for 2023-24.

The Marlies are on the road for two games and next play on Friday night in Belleville against the Senators. The two teams will have a rematch on Saturday afternoon at the Coca-Cola Coliseum.

On Wednesday, the Marlies were shut out for the fifth time this season in a 3-0 loss in Laval against the Rocket. Matt Murray made 21 saves in the loss.
