Tyson Barrie, whose career spanned nearly 900 regular-season and playoff games, featuring stints with high-profile Canadian teams in Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary, announced his retirement from the NHL on Monday.

The 34-year-old offensive defenceman from Victoria, B.C., was a high third-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2009 who came to the Leafs in July of 2019 in a significant trade with forward Alex Kerfoot for centre Nazem Kadri.

But Barrie’s two 50-point-plus seasons with the Avs were never bettered with the aforementioned clubs or in two injury and healthy scratch-shortened seasons with the Nashville Predators.
His 70 games with the Leafs produced 39 points, but none in a five-game loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets during the ‘COVID bubble’ playoffs.
He was not re-signed and joined Connor McDavid and the Oilers in a one-year deal, staying for three 40-point seasons, one as part of the league’s No. 1 power play in 2020-21.

Barrie’s regular-season career totals were 109 goals and 396 assists for 508 points.
He played his final season with the Calgary Flames, signing a one-year deal with the club after attending training camp on a professional tryout last summer. However, he ended up on waivers and finished the campaign with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.
Barrie also holds the distinction of being one of nine players in NHL history to have played 85 or more games during a single NHL season. He suited up for 85 contests in 2022-23 thanks to his mid-season trade from Edmonton to Nashville. The record for most games played in a season is 86, held by Jimmy Carson and Bob Kudelski.
