With bids starting at US$50,000, they were already up to $189,880 by 10 a.m. ET on Wednesday. Bidding runs until June 11.

The jersey shows signs of game use and has a handwritten signature by Gretzky as well as the date of the game “4-18-99.”

While Gretzky and the Rangers came out on the losing end against the Pittsburgh Penguins that night in overtime, the Great One did notch his record 2,857

career point with an assist – a mark unlikely to ever be broken.

This will not be the first Gretzky jersey to sell for a massive price at auction. Just last year, a game-worn jersey from his final contest with the Edmonton Oilers sold for $1.45 million, also through Grey Flannel Auctions.

That price beat the previous record for a game-worn jersey, which belonged to Paul Henderson’s 1972 Summit Series jersey. It sold for $1.3 million in 2012.

In 2019, a game-worn jersey from Gretzky’s 1979-80 rookie season with the Oilers went for more than $221,000.
