Kevin Koe advances to Alberta Boston Pizza Cup final

Kevin Koe is one win away from his ninth provincial men’s curling title.
The Calgarian’s victory in Saturday night’s Page playoff 1-v-2 game of the 2025 Alberta Boston Pizza Cup, presented by Best Western, has him waiting for an opponent in Sunday’s championship draw at the Stettler Recreation Centre.
That will either be Edmonton’s Evan Van Amsterdam or Sexsmith’s Daylan Vavrek, who match up in Sunday’s semifinal.
It was Van Amsterdam losing 6-4 to Koe in the 1-v-2 draw, thanks to the Calgary rink counting three in the third end.
Only Koe’s Glencoe Club squad, Van Amsterdam’s Saville Curling Centre side and Sexsmith Curling Club’s Vavrek remain in the hunt for the Alberta tankard after Saturday’s C-side qualifiers and the start of the playoff round.
Those C qualifiers in the afternoon saw Vavrek top Calgary CC’s Jamie King 7-4 and Jacob Libbus’ Ellerslie CC crew upend Saville CC’s Zachary Davies 10-4 to score playoff spots in Saturday’s late 3-v-4 elimination game.
That draw saw Vavrek defeat Libbus 6-3 — on the strength of Vavrek’s deuce in the second end — sending the Peace Country team onto Sunday’s action.
The semifinal between Vavrek and Van Amsterdam is a morning draw (10 a.m.), with the winner then squaring off against Koe in the afternoon final (3 p.m.).
The champion earns the right to represent of the province at the 2025 Brier, slated for Feb. 28-March 9 in Kelowna, B.C.
Elsewhere in provincial playdown action, Braden Calvert is in Sunday’s final of Manitoba’s Viterra Championship in Portage la Prairie, Man.
The Winnipeg skip and his Fort Rouge CC crew await the winner of the semifinal between defending champ Reid Carruthers, of Winnipeg’s Granite CC, and Winnipeg’s Brett Walter, of the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club. Calvert beat Walter 5-4 in the Page playoff 1-v-2 game Saturday, while Carruthers avoided elimination with a 10-3 victory over Winnipeg’s Sean Grassie, of the Deer Lodge CC.
A Brier invite is also on the line in that finale, which is being contested at Stride Place.
