Leafs fans bring chaotic energy downtown after Game 6 OT win

When the Maple Leafs win, their nation of fans like to celebrate hard.

There was no better example of this than after Toronto beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in OT in Game 6 on Saturday.

Members of Leafs Nation who watched the game at Maple Leaf Square, at bars or from the comfort of their own homes took to the streets to celebrate like the team had won the Stanley Cup.

This caused some mild chaos in the downtown core — which even led to TTC delays. It was the first time the Leafs had won a playoff series in 19 years, so can you blame fans for their passionate elation?

Videos shared on social media showed a variety of what took place.

The smoke machines worked overtime at Maple Leaf Square in one video as fans cheered wildly and embraced one another witnessing Toronto punching a ticket to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

In another video, a large group of fans converged on Bremner Blvd. to set off fireworks in celebration.

Fans even blocked entire intersections as hundreds of people spilled onto roads to wildly celebrate the win, as seen in another video.

The street-blocking fans are the likely culprits to the surface-level delays experienced by the TTC. In a tweet, the TTC noted all downtown streetcar and bus routes were experiencing “major delays due to traffic and pedestrian congestion due to celebrations stemming from the Toronto Maple Leafs Round 1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.”

The Maple Leafs Twitter account amusingly apologized for the transit congestion, quote tweeting the TTC and stating, “Sorry.”
