Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback in doubt after saying he’ll run for President of Ireland

Conor McGregor is ready for a fight.
But, unfortunately for UFC fans, it looks like it’s going to be happening in the voting booths instead of the octagon.
The 36-year-old Irish MMA star came out firing on social media on Thursday morning, saying he was fed up with the “charlatans” in charge of his homeland and saying how he would run the country.
“As President I hold the power to summon the Dáil as well as dissolve it,” McGregor posted on X. “So as I said before, I would have all the answers the people of Ireland seek from these thieves of the working man, these disrupters of the family unit, these destructors of small businesses, and on and on and on!”
The Dáil that McGregor is referring to is the lower house and principal chamber of the Oireachtas, which also includes the president of Ireland and a senate in the Irish government.
“These charlatans in their positions of power would be summoned to answer to the people of Ireland and I would have it done by day end,” McGregor continued on X. “Or I would be left with no choice but to dissolve the Dáil entirely. Stop the train until.
“The people of Ireland deserve the answers they seek. Point blank. This would be my power as President.”
He then pointed towards 2025, when Ireland holds its presidential election and stated that he is the “only logical choice.”
“I know very well. Ireland needs an active President employed wholly by the people of Ireland. It is me. I am the only logical choice. 2025 is upcoming …”
This isn’t the first time that the former UFC champion has expressed his desire to run for President of Ireland.
In December 2023, McGregor posted a picture of himself with the caption “Ireland, your President.”
“Potential competition if I run. Gerry (Adams), 78. Bertie (Ahern). 75. Enda (Kenny), 74. Each with unbreakable ties to their individual parties politics. Regardless of what the public outside of their parties feel. These parties govern themselves vs govern the people,” McGregor posted.
“Or me, 35. Young, active, passionate, fresh skin in the game. I listen. I support. I adapt. I have no affiliation/bias/favoritism toward any party.
“They would genuinely be held to account regarding the current sway of public feeling. I’d even put it all to vote. There’d be votes every week to make sure. I can fund. It would not be me in power as President, people of Ireland. It would be me and you.”

McGregor, a former lightweight and featherweight champion, has not competed in the UFC in more than three years. His most recent attempt at a comeback in the octagon at UFC 303 against Michael Chandler earlier this year was derailed after he suffered a broken toe in training.
UFC CEO Dana White recently said that he “is not even thinking about” McGregor’s return, which could open the gates for a political run for the man known as ‘Notorious.’
