In the first heat, Team USA won and posted the fastest time of the day at 3:21.44, followed by Great Britain, France and Belgium.
It was the second disappointing result of the Paris Games for Schmidt. During last week’s mixed 4×400-metre relay, the German squad also finished seventh in its heat and was eliminated.
The 25-year-old blonde bombshell also found herself in some drama involving a displeased teammate.
Luna Bulmahn expressed frustration at being overlooked for the relay team in favour of Schmidt.
“Yes, I am the second fastest 400m athlete on paper. No, I was not nominated for the mixed relay,” Bulmahn wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post.

German sprinter Jean Paul Bredau — Bulmahn’s boyfriend — also was part of the mixed relay team and seemingly shared his disappointment in the lineup.
“A few decisions were made that not everyone approved. The DLV (German Athletics Association) made it very clear: The fastest four should run. A different decision was made,” he wrote on Instagram and then deleted.
Bredau issued an apology and later was allowed to continue competing in Paris while Bulmahn was removed from the women’s 4×400-metre team.
“Jean Paul Bredau has apologized and will compete in the individual 400m race. Luna Bulmahn will not be used in the relay in Paris. Relays are a team sport. The athletes and coaches form this team. Success depends on good teamwork and mutual trust among all,” the DLV said in a statement earlier this week.
