Every season, I’m constantly asked the same question: “What’s your favourite European ski resort?” The answer isn’t as simple as naming a mountain. My choice comes down to the full experience — how easy it is to get there, how you’re treated when you arrive, the atmosphere of the mountain or village, the surrounding scenery, and, above all, the value.

Two resorts stand out to me for ticking all those boxes. They each offer something unique, whether you’re traveling as a family, a couple, or a group of friends.

I was genuinely surprised — and completely blown away — by the size and scale of SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser–Brixental Valley in Austria. Their motto, ‘Insanely big — insanely close,’ is the perfect way to describe this massive, interconnected resort nestled in the Kitzbuhel Alps. It not only offers impressive terrain but also jaw-dropping 360-degree panoramic views, especially from the peak of Hohe Salve. The views are amazing with the towering Wilder Kaiser mountain and Brixental Valley.

SkiWelt is one of the largest and most modern ski areas in the world with a staggering 275 km of pistes, 81 cable car lifts, three terrain parks and 80 rustic, family-run ski huts that make those famous two-hour alpine lunches a real highlight. The resort is proudly eco-friendly, blending Tyrolean charm with sustainable values. It’s also incredibly accessible, with Salzburg, Munich, and Innsbruck all within easy train or driving distance.

The region is made up of eight distinct villages, each with its own personality and appeal, allowing visitors to choose the one that best fits their needs. We stayed in Scheffau, right in the heart of the area at the magnificent Kaiserlodge Luxury Apartment Hotel at Wilder Kaiser. This hotel was a real treat with wonderful history, Tyrolean wood and materials, dining, magnificent spa, huge kids club, man-made lake with large modern rooms. Looking up at the towering Wilder Kaiser range from the village’s main street was a moment of awe I won’t forget.

One standout village is Söll, home to Austria’s largest night skiing area with 10 km of perfectly lit trails. It’s a family favourite, too, with fun features such as the “Witches Winter” treasure hunt for kids on skis and a dedicated family skating rink. For non-skiers or those looking for a different kind of thrill, there’s a unique toboggan run that’s especially fun to watch under the lights.

Après-ski doesn’t disappoint either. The revolving terrace at Gipfelalm is a local hotspot, known for its lively atmosphere and scenic views. From Hohe Salve, you can take the resort’s longest run — an 8 km descent to Söll — gliding down wide, gently rolling trails that are perfect for families. The terrain breakdown is well-balanced: 42% easy, 44% intermediate, and 14% advanced.

SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser–Brixental truly offers a complete alpine experience — incredible skiing, charming villages, convenient access, and exceptional value. It’s a must-visit destination that belongs on every skier’s calendar.

Saas-Fee

My second pick is the stunning Saas-Fee Saastal in Switzerland, a resort that’s equally strong in value, scenery, and atmosphere. The town sits in a dramatic natural amphitheatre, surrounded by 13 towering, snow-covered peaks, all above 4,000 meters — making it one of the highest ski areas in the country.

Saas-Fee is nicknamed the “Pearl of the Alps,” and it’s easy to see why. With its preserved Swiss wooden architecture and traditional alpine charm. Heritage food storage huts dot the landscape, a tribute to how locals embrace and protect their history. There’s even a whimsical touch of pop culture — a “Last Christmas” sound booth where you can sing along to the classic Wham! hit, a nod to the music video filmed here.

The town is car-free, which only adds to its charm and serenity. Whether you’re looking for cozy value hotels or five-star luxury, Saas-Fee has it all. We stayed at The Capra, a stunning luxury hotel in the heart of town, offering spacious rooms and chef-inspired cuisine — a truly indulgent experience after a day on the slopes. They’ll even pick you up on arrival and take you around town in a battery powered trolley.

The ski area itself is impressive, with 100 km of pistes, 22 lifts, and three cable cars, including the world’s highest underground funicular — the Metro Alpin — which takes you to Drehrestaurant Mittelallalin, the highest revolving restaurant on Earth. From there, the views of the peaks and valleys are nothing short of epic. You’ll ski at elevations between 2,500 and 3,000 meters, guaranteeing light, fluffy powder and excellent snow conditions.

Saas-Fee is also a year-round destination, thanks to the mighty Allalin Glacier. Even in summer, ski teams from around the world, including Canada, come here to train on the glacier’s high-altitude runs. Off the slopes, the dining scene is rich and diverse, offering everything cuisine from around the world including Austria’s famous Wiener schnitzel and fondue dishes.

Despite its international reputation, Saas-Fee maintains a low-key, welcoming vibe. It’s a quiet, family-friendly resort that doesn’t chase flash — it delivers quality, beauty, and authenticity in spades. Both Saas-Fee and SkiWelt offer excellent kids’ programs, making them ideal for families seeking adventure in both winter and summer.
