A 17-year-old student was fatally stabbed by another student during an altercation at a high school track meet in suburban Dallas on Wednesday, police said.
The suspect, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, was taken into custody and charged with murder, according to police in Frisco, about 50 km north of Dallas. Bond had not yet been set.
A police spokesperson said Anthony was being held at the city jail and would be transferred to Collin County jail. The spokesperson also said he did not know whether Anthony had an attorney yet.
Efforts to find contact information for family members to speak on Anthony’s behalf were not immediately successful, according to the Associated Press.
The Frisco Independent School District said the stabbing happened at a meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, where student athletes from eight of the district’s 12 schools were competing.
The student who was killed was Austin Metcalf, an 11th grader at Memorial High School.
Details on what led to the stabbing were not immediately released by police, but the victim’s father, Jeff Metcalf, told a local NBC affiliate that the inciting incident was an argument over a seat in the stands at the track meet.
Anthony, a senior at Centennial High School, allegedly was told that he was sitting in the wrong seat before he drew a knife and attacked Austin, according to Jeff Metcalf.
Anthony allegedly stabbed Austin in the chest as the victim’s twin brother, Hunter, watched.
Hunter told the outlet that he attempted to save his brother’s life, but nothing could be done.
“I tried to whip around as fast as I could,” Hunter Metcalf said. “I looked at my brother and I’m not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him.”
“They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother’s arms,” Jeff Metcalf added.
Jeff said Hunter called him after the incident and he rushed to the stadium only to find Austin unresponsive on a gurney.
“I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospital. And we prayed, and it’s God’s plan, I don’t understand it, but they weren’t able to save him. This is murder,” Jeff Metcalf said.
The teen was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
“Despite lifesaving measures by police and fire personnel, including CPR and the administration of blood, the (17)-year-old died,” Frisco police said.
