The hiring has not yet been finalized, we’re told, and no official announcement from the Leafs was expected on Thursday. There is no clarity yet on what Doan’s role will be.
A legend in the eyes of anyone who followed the Arizona Coyotes, Doan was Matthews’ childhood idol growing up, something Matthews has referenced several times during his tenure with the Leafs.
ESPN hockey analyst Kevin Weekes tweeted on Thursday afternoon that Doan would be named as an assistant to Treliving.
The hiring would mark Treliving’s first significant move since he was named Leafs GM last week. The 46-year-old Doan has been the Coyotes’ chief hockey development officer; before Treliving became GM of the Calgary Flames in 2014, he was an assistant GM with the Coyotes.

One example of Matthews’ admiration for Doan came in a tweet in February 2019 when the Coyotes retired Doan’s No. 19.
“Thank you for everything you’ve done for hockey in Arizona and inspiring kids like me growing up playing the game in the valley,” Matthews tweeted. “Congratulations on your jersey retirement Doaner! So well deserved.”
My childhood idol growing up. Amazing player and an even better person. Congrats on an unbelievable career Doaner !

Matthews, of course, can be signed to a contract extension on July 1, the same day a no-move clause kicks in for the final year of Matthews’ current contract. It remains to be seen how the addition of Doan would impact Matthews’ coming decisions, but it certainly can’t hurt.
In 2014, a 16-year-old Auston Matthews joined a Coyotes offseason skate, organized by captain Shane Doan
