CHAPMAN: Champions League spots still in play on final EPL matchday
The great irony in this English Premier League season is that the Super League debacle that Liverpool were a part of would eliminate the only drama we have had to enjoy this season. The relegation races were all but settled a month ago. Manchester City slowly pulled away from everyone and it has been apparent they were champions at least six weeks ago.

CHAPMAN: Liverpool charging hard toward a Champions League spot
With just a handful of games left, Manchester City are champions, while Sheffield United, West Brom and Fulham will be relegated. The last Champions League spot in the top four is the only drama left to decide, but even with Leicester and Chelsea slipping up in recent weeks, Liverpool and West Ham had been unable to capitalize. Liverpool’s title defence was derailed in October when it lost starting centre backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in successive weeks. Third-choice centre back Joel Matip was ruled out for the season in January, and Liverpool beat United on Thursday with Nate Phillips — who started the season looking for a loan deal in the Championship — and Rhys Williams — who spent last season with Kidderminster in the fourth division. If you’re partial to betting on sports, you may want to look at the odds for Fulham and Crystal Palace this weekend. They take on Chelsea and Manchester City and whose league standing will make them prohibitive favourites, but with both clubs holding the advantage after the first leg of their Champions League semi-finals, they may be rotating heavily and be a little distracted.

What a week this was for European soccer. The announcement of a new Super League that would grant ‘franchises’ to 12 of Europe’s traditional powers came quickly, saw rampant criticism, protests and threats, then teams pulled out one by one, leaving the new league dead in the water.
