In his courtside seats, just a few feet away from coach Nick Nurse and the players, Drake is a fixture at Toronto Raptors home games. But Wednesday night he was the loudest voice in the cheering section as the Canadian men’s national soccer team inched closer to its goal of representing our country in the 2022 World Cup.

After Canada notched a 4-1 win against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday night, coach John Herdman told reporters afterwards that the rapper reached out to Edmonton soccer star Alphonso Davies, who also plays for Germany’s Bayern Munich.
“He just got a text from Drake. Drake wants to meet with (the team). Hopefully tonight he gets a chance to take that off his bucket list. That’s the type of performance (Davies) had,” Herdman said.

Davies, one of the best left back players in the world, gave Canada a 2-1 lead after he made an 80-yard dash downfield and stole the ball from an opposing player.
Hours after Canada’s victory, photos began to appear on social media with the rapper posing at Sotto Sotto with some of the team’s players, including Davies and Brampton native Tajon Buchanan. Drake also shared a photo of Davies’ jersey to his Instagram Story with the soccer phenom adding a photo to his own Story in which he posed alongside the Grammy winner.

On social media, fans debated Drake’s endorsement, with some pointing to the so-called “Drake curse” as a sign the team is headed for failure.
For those unaware, the “Drake curse” emerged after an unscientific study determined that when the Hotline Bling star dons the jerseys of the teams he supports they have a tendency to lose.
“There goes our chances,” one critic commented on Twitter, with another asking, “Did we not determine he needs to stay away from Canadian teams for them to win?”
“Not that I don’t like you Drake, but please … stay a bit away from Canada(‘s) Soccer team … we don’t need the Drake curse…just stay with your Raptors or even Maple Leafs, that will be just fine!! Much appreciated,” a third person chimed.

But a fourth person shared a video of Drake massaging Raptors coach Nick Nurse during a timeout of the 2019 NBA Playoffs, reminding everyone how his fandom paid off for Toronto that year.
As they keep their eye on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Canada’s next two matches are also on home soil. They’ll face Costa Rica on Nov. 12 and Mexico on Nov. 16, both at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium.
