CRIME SCENE: Oshawa man wanted on warrant for alleged assault

An arrest warrant has been issued for a 24-year-old male in connection to an alleged Oshawa assault earlier this month.

Durham Regional Police said on June 1 around 10:30 p.m. they responded to the area of Steeplechase St. and Windfields Farm Dr. for an armed person.

Police said that two people were walking in the opposite direction when the suspect allegedly pulled a knife out and tried to stab one of them.

No physical injuries were reported and the suspect fled prior to police arrival.

The accused has since been identified as Anthony Oliveira, 24, of Oshawa. He is wanted for assault with a weapon, possession of weapons dangerous and two counts of fail to comply with a probation order.

DURHAM COPS PROBE SUSPECTED HATE-MOTIVATED INCIDENT

Durham Regional Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after suspected hate-motivated graffiti was discovered in Oshawa.

On Sunday, around 2:50 p.m., officers responded to a mischief call in the area of Adelaide Ave. E and Townline Rd. N. after the victim’s property was defaced with hateful and derogatory slurs by an unknown suspect or suspects.

Cops believe the victim’s home was specifically targeted and are appealing to anyone in the area who may have information to come forward.

“We are deeply concerned and disheartened by this act of hate and property damage directed toward the 2SLGBTQI+ community and all those impacted by this senseless act,” Durham police said in a news release. “Everyone deserves to feel safe and accepted for who they are. An investigation is underway, and we are committed to ensuring those responsible are held accountable.”

ROBBERY ATTEMPTS IN YORK REGION

York Regional Police are seeking suspects and witnesses following two attempted robberies at Vaughan cellphone stores.

Cops said that last Saturday just after 6 p.m., officers responded to a report of a commercial robbery in the area of Rutherford and Weston Rds.

The victim told police two masked suspects approached the store and began smashing the front window with a hammer, but due to product security measures, they were unsuccessful in stealing any items and fled in a dark four-door sedan driven by a third suspect.

About a half-hour later, officers were called to a second attempted robbery at a store near Weston Rd. and Colossus Dr. and found the front door had been smashed.

Two employees and two customers were inside at the time, but no injuries were reported.

Based on the suspect descriptions and the proximity in time and location, investigators believe the same suspects are responsible for both incidents.

The two suspects are described as Black males with thin builds and wearing masks.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area, has dashcam or surveillance video from around the time of the incidents, or information that could help identify the suspects is asked to call police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6630, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or at 1800222tips.com.
