Toronto’s speed camera on Parkside Dr. has been vandalized and cut to the ground.
The organization Safe Parkside posted a picture of the camera, which was damaged over the weekend.
“Someone had taken the time and effort to cut through the metal pole that supports the speed camera and send the entire contraption crashing to the ground,” Safe Parkside wrote.
“This occurred just 3 days after Toronto City Council voted in support of a complete street redesign of Parkside Drive that prioritizes the safety of all road users and includes the installation of bike lanes.”
The City of Toronto said in an email it condemns all acts of theft and vandalism.
“Tampering with, damaging or stealing an Automated Speed Enforcement device negatively impacts road safety and allows dangerous speeding to continue near vulnerable road users,” the city said.
“The city does not own any of the Automated Speed Enforcement devices as they are a vendor-provided service; it is the vendor’s responsibility to replace or fix devices. The city’s vendor is currently assessing the damage and will develop a plan for repairs.”
Since the speed camera was installed in April 2022, 63,633 tickets have been issued costing $6,808,731.
The highest speed recorded was 126 km/h in the 40 km/h zone.
