3 people charged after weekend demonstration in Scarborough

Police announced charges after three people were arrested on Sunday during a demonstration near a pro-Israel event in Scarborough’s north end.

Toronto Police said they were in the Nugget Ave.-McCowan Rd. area on Sunday as a demonstration was being held in the same area where the Friends of Jesus Christ Church was hosting its annual Israel Rejoicing Celebration.

Police said officers recognized a woman at the demonstration who was wanted in connection with a failure-to-comply-with-conditions investigation and attempted to arrest her.

A man allegedly intervened to prevent officers from making the arrest, police said, and assaulted one of the officers before the wanted woman was arrested anyway.

Peter Riad, 40, of Markham, was charged with obstructing a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer.

Niko Newell, 23, of Boulter, was charged with failure to comply with an undertaking.

Police also said a woman was recording the demonstration before being approached by an upset person who allegedly assaulted the victim with a megaphone to prevent her from filming.

The victim moved away from the group, police said, before being approached again by the upset person, who continued to yell at the victim and allegedly assaulted her again with the megaphone.

The victim, who did not know her alleged attacker, did not suffer any physical injuries.

Eman Harb, 56, of Kitchener, is charged with assault with a weapon.

The incidents came on the same day that police responded to reports of a fight during another demonstration in the Bathurst St.-Sheppard Ave. area of North York, where a pro-Israel rally was being held.

They said three people were charged and a man in his 80s was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have yet to announce what those charges were.
