Mahoney was arrested in Cowtown without incident.

According to investigators, Nyhuis was murdered at his Waterdown home on March 3. A concerned friend performing a welfare check on March 6 found his dead body.

Nyhuis, 55, had been shot to death at his residence in the area of Dundas St. E. and Spring Creek Dr., police said.

“It wasn’t robbery or drug-related,” Det. Brewster told reporters. “The accused and Jeff knew each other. This wasn’t random.”

Brewster would only say that Mahoney was from a small community south of Calgary.

The victim had been married and been involved in several short-term relationships. Police ruled out any connection to Nyhuis’s love life.

“That wasn’t the case,” Brewster said. “He [Mahoney] was invited into the house as a friend.”

Both the victim and accused were enthusiastic billiards players. Brewster said the pair met through mutual friends who were also players.

So far the gun has not been recovered nor has a motive become apparent. The detective added that Mahoney had been in Ontario for several days when the shooting occurred.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to come forward.

In a separate incident on March 16, 74-year-old Charles James Francis Jouvence, called Jacques by friends and family, was stabbed to death at his home. Officers were called to the city’s downtown core – in the Hunter and Spring Sts. area – around 4 p.m.

There, officers found Jouvence on the porch of his home suffering from a stab wound. He died later in hospital.

According to cops, Jouvence was stabbed in the upper body.

But the tragic incident took a twist when police had an interaction with the 30-year-old suspect inside the home and the man was shot. Now, the province’s Special Investigation Unit has invoked its mandate, which happens when a death or serious injury occurs during an interaction with police.

The suspect is known to police and remains in hospital with a gunshot wound.
