Peel Regional Police say officers went to an apartment on the sixth floor of the building in the area of Malta Ave. and Ray Lawson Blvd. — northwest of Hurontario St. and Hwy. 407 — around 9:50 a.m.
“On arrival, officers spoke with the family members involved,” Const. Tyler Bell-Morena told reporters at the scene, explaining the officers tried to make contact with the man but he allegedly produced “an edged weapon and was subsequently shot by police.”
The man was initially treated at the scene and then transported to a trauma centre in Toronto where Bell-Morena said he was in stable condition and expected to recover.
Police were unable to release any further details because the province’s police watchdog is now investigating.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, which probes any serious injury or death involving officers, released a brief statement Wednesday afternoon.
“Officers arrived in the apartment suite, there was an interaction, and the man was shot by an officer,” the SIU said, confirming that the man was taken to hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries.”
An SIU spokesperson told reporters that the man had been holding a knife in his hand and he was shot in the stomach.
The spokesperson also reportedly confirmed two family members were in the apartment with the man and one of them called police.
