With the average asking rent across Canada for all home types reaching $2,181 last month – up 8.8% from a year ago – and Toronto being upwards of $2,400, it’s no wonder people will do whatever they can to save money.

Landlords across the GTA have become increasingly inventive with their accommodations, from putting beds in the middle of kitchens to using bunk beds as a way to squeeze in more people.
“Everyone needs to start reporting these illegal housing units,” one person wrote. “Whether you report on Kijiji or to the city it doesn’t matter. Everyone needs to start making noise. I’m not even a renter and I’m downright outraged at what’s happening.”
They added: “This country is going to s*** and the government is completely detached from everyday Canadians.”

Another wrote, “Imagine thinking it’s ok to cram four people in one room and make $2400 in revenue.”
A third person chimed in, “PLUS 10% OF UTILITIES. Slumlord is cleaning up, and that leads me to assume there are 10 people to split utilities with!”
One Redditor suggested bunk beds “if you’re going to pack people like sardines,” but another jaded user remarked, “With bunk beds they would just stack eight people in this bedroom instead.”
