A man who was shot by a cop while “actively attacking” a woman in a Unionville condo on Wednesday has died.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has said York Regional Police officers responded to Unionville Gardens at 278 Buchanan Dr. – on the northwest corner of Hwy. 7 and Birchmount Rd. – around 4:45 a.m. and “located a male actively attacking a female.”
“Upon arriving at the unit, the officers heard sounds of a disturbance from inside,” the SIU said in a statement released Saturday. “Officers entered the unit, and a short time later, one officer discharged his firearm one time.”
“A man was struck,” the province’s police watchdog added. “The man, and a woman who was located inside the unit, were transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries.”
The SIU, which investigates any serious injury or death involving police officers, explained that the 34-year-old man died in hospital on Friday.
The dead man’s name has not been released.
“The woman who was located in the unit remains in hospital in stable condition,” the SIU said, adding “a police-issued firearm and a knife were recovered from the scene.”
The SIU has previously said the woman was believed to have suffered stab wounds.

The SIU continues to investigate the police-involved shooting.
One subject official and three witness officials have been designated.
