A 22-year-old Mississauga man has been charged with murder after a restaurant was set ablaze Sunday in King Township.
York Regional Police said they are also seeking witnesses to the incident after officers responded at about 3 a.m. to reports of a fire in the Hwy. 27-King Rd. area, where a building was found to be fully engulfed in flames when first responders arrived.
The blaze was extinguished by King Township Fire and Rescue Service before they found a body inside during a search of the property.
Police said the identity of the dead person still needs to be confirmed by the chief coroner’s office, but that they consider it to be a targeted incident.
“The circumstances surrounding the fire are considered suspicious and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been engaged,” Const. Kevin Nebrija said in a news release.
Saeed Alshoubaki has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and arson.
Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area at the time to check their security cameras or dashcams. They can contact the homicide unit at 1-866-876-5423, Ext. 7865, homicide@yrp.ca, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.1800222tips.com.
