Durham Regional Police say members of the Tactical Support Unit (TSU) were travelling east on Hwy. 401 when they observed a vehicle “driving erratically” shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday.
“They attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle exited the highway, fleeing northbound on Stevenson Rd. S.,” Const. Brittany Kennedy said in a statement released Wednesday.
With help from Air1, their police helicopter, she said officers followed the vehicle until it came to a stop in a green space near Simcoe St. S. and Valley Dr.
“The driver fled on foot, but Air1 was able to provide his location to officers on the ground and he was taken into custody,” Kennedy explained.

Video from above, captured by Air1 and released by police, shows the suspect vehicle speeding along a road, driving straight through a T-intersection and ending up in a field.
The driver is then seen running away from the vehicle for a short distance before dropping to the ground.
Numerous officers can be seen closing in on the suspect while receiving direction from Air1 and then taking the individual into custody.
Michael Welch, of Toronto, is charged with offences, including impaired operation of a conveyance, failure to stop for police, and operation while prohibited.
